significant:

• Pre-processed pigments can be contaminated or mixed with other
  chemical powders making it impossible to identify the cause of
  contamination. Whole plants, on the other hand, can easily be tested
  and analysed for contamination before processing.
• When using pre-ground pigments, it is impossible to acertain the
  freshness of the plant used. Farmers may mix leftover stock from
  previous harvests with fresh plants to cut costs. Like with food spices
  which lose flavour with age, older plants make the colour less vibrant.

• When whole plants are used, they can be ground using a process of
  very fine micronisation. Pre-ground pigments are usually ground to a
  standard level, similar for food spices. This fineness allows for smooth application allowing an even distribution on the hair fiber
